Braintree: 107th birthday for George
4:50pm Sunday 5th February 2012

A man who is believed to be the sixth oldest in the country celebrated his 107th birthday with 27 family members.
George Assinder is a trained opera singer and spent his working life in banking after winning a scholarship with Barclays.
Mr Assinder, who lives at the Moat House care home in Great Easton, was married to Astrid, with whom he had a son, Ivor.
He said he has several grandchildren and great grandchildren and his favourite memory is travelling to Germany after the First World War to help restore the currency and he was one of the people to give out ten marks to members of the German population.
Mr Assinder, who celebrated his birthday on Friday, was previously a beekeeper and still loves a pint of beer.
And remarkably, he only gave up running when he turned 100.
