Braintree district: Councillors allowances and staff wages to rise by 1%

Councillors' allowances will rise by about £50 in line with wage increases of 1 per cent.
From April 2012 councillors will receive a basic allowance of £4,491, a rise of £45, after the budget was approved at Wednesday’s Braintree Council meeting.
Council employees will receive a 1 per cent cost of living pay rise for the next two years and a 2 per cent rise from 2014 onwards.
The overall increase in salaries is capped at £225,160, with £138,120 being the pay rise and £87,040 being increment pay.
Braintree has the seventh highest councillor allowances out of eleven councils in Essex, with the highest being Colchester at £6,316 and the lowest being Castle Point with £3,150.
In the year 2010 to 2011 £266,203 was paid out in basic allowances, £162,314 in special allowances for those with extra responsibilities and £15,773 was claimed in expenses.
